Goal summary

To provide reusable menstrual kits to the 1.315 promising female students at Nyamira Girls’ High School in Bondo, Kenya.

Project summary

Yearly, almost ten students drop out of Nyamira Girls' High School because they lack menstrual supplies. Disposable sanitary pads are too expensive and also hard to obtain so instead, the woman use newspaper, leaves, toilet paper, or rags. Since none of these provide adequate comfort or protection, many females stay home during their periods, falling behind on their studies and often drop out. Lack of feminine products also increases risk of pregnancy and HIV/AIDS as many males will provide money for necessities such as feminine products in exchange for sex.

How

By providing 1,315 environmentally friendly, reusable menstrual kits (called AFRIpads) to the students at Nyamira, they can attend school every day of every month with comfort and dignity. With this we’ll also be supporting the women who work at AFRIpads in Kampala, Uganda.

Beneficiaries

  • 1315
  • Students at Nyamira Girl's High School in Bondo, Kenya. These females are ages 13 - 19, and 1 out of 5 is an orphan.

Why (Project owners drive)

In February 2012, I traveled to Bondo, Kenya to visit some friends at Ekklesia Community for Advocacy and Peace Initiative (ECAPI), a Kenyan organization that works for female empowerment. As I spoke at several girls' schools, including Nyamira Girls' High School, and met with women's groups and educators, I was startled to discover that one of the main reasons why many Kenyan girls drop out of school is because they do not have proper materials to manage their periods. There are many difficult challenges that keep Kenyan females from going to school. Lack of sanitary products should not be one of them. To me, access to feminine products seemed like a basic human right. If you have anything, you have pads or tampons--right? I came home from Kenya and started doing research. That’s when I found AFRIpads, a Uganda-based, women-run business which makes and sells reusable cloth pads. If we purchase these pads from AFRIpads and have them delivered to Bondo, ECAPI can distribute them to Nymira Girls' High School. This will not only allow the students in Bondo to attend school, every day of every month, for a full year, but will also support the females in Kampala who work for AFRIpads.
